The goal of Racquets for Reading!!! is to improve school readiness and ultimately third-grade reading scores. This initiative has traditionally supplemented our tennis activities for kids. Through Racquets for Reading!!! we provide book grants and FUN giveaways to encourage preschoolers and kindergartners to learn to read and love to read. Tennis is a lifetime sport. Reading is a lifetime skill. Even though we were unable to perform school visits again during the 2023-24 school year due to schools' emphasis on learning loss and our expanded focus on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (see Line 29 explanation, next), we were still able to help preschool and kindergarten teachers get more than 2,700 books and giveaways into the hands of 340 students in three school systems (Grants $5,330) Expenses $5,330 ... Line 29: Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (DPIL) - During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, we moved our emphasis and resources to starting affiliates of DPIL, the flagship, free book-gifting program of the Dollywood Foundation, in our service area and all across Virginia. Our goal is to build a statewide network that could potentially benefit the 500,000+ children under age five in Virginia. During the year, we helped start DPIL programs in Bath, Brunswick, Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Grayson, Greensville, Lancaster, Louisa, Montgomery, Northumberland and Powhatan counties and the cities of Galax, Radford and Salem. These 16 new affiliates now serve more than 6,700 children, ages 0-5. DPIL programs are now in 24 of the 28 counties in our area and all three of our area's independent cities. Statewide, the program is now in 97 of the 133 counties/independent cities, with total enrollment exceeding 69,000. (Grants $13,631) Expenses $13,673 ... Line 30: "QuickSTARS" - A program to support competitive tennis players who started tennis in the organization as QuickStart kids. During the tax year, the organization gave tennis equipment to one child to continue tennis practicing and competing in tennis tournaments (Grants $0) Expenses $323 Form 990-EZ, Part V, Line 34 Significant changes made to the organizing and governing documents, all effective April 29. 2024: ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION amended to (a) reflect an increased emphasis on childhood literacy and healthy eating in addition to youth tennis initiatives and (b) reduce the minimum number of directors from 5 to 3. BYLAWS amended to (a) reflect change of business address, (b) allow the organization to operate using a doing-business-as name as permitted under state law, (c) reduce the minimum and maximum numbers of board members to 3 and 9, respectively, (d) reduce the age minimum for director eligibility from age 21 to age 18, (e) delete the need for an executive committee and (f) allow electronic signatures and voting by directors.
