Throughout most of 2023, we were in negotiations with the Diocese of Allentown to purchase historic St. Joseph's Church from the diocese. Our purpose is to restore and preserve this church as a sacred place of worship for the community, and for the Society to provide education about the history of this church and the history and contributions of all immigrants in general, who came to Bethlehem in the early 20th century, and worked and settled on the Southside of Bethlehem, PA. In May 2023, the diocese required that we conduct and pay for a building assessment to ensure we knew the condition of the church building since we had agreed to buy the church "as is". This assessment cost $5000. Another condition of sale required expenditure of another $5000 for pews, in order for us to keep the pews in the church. The diocese would not agree to publicly announce that they were in negotiations to sell the church to us, so we were unable to publicly raise funds as we awaited the purchase of the church. Donations were received from board members to cover the expenses explained here. We signed an Agreement of Sale with the Diocese in December, 2023, at which time no money passed hands between the parties to the Agreement. Once the Agreement of Sale was signed, we received a major donation from a benefactor for the purchase price of the church. The actual purchase of the church building occurred in 2024, so we did not own the church, have other expenses for the church, nor expenses for fundraising in 2023. Our church is considered a canonical "chapel" according to church law, and therefore the Catholic worship activities are still overseen by the bishop of the diocese. The additional bylaws explain our affiliation and our relationship with the diocese for religious matters only. We are still a public charity independent from the Diocese in all financial and legal aspects.
