<PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>Support, Advocate, Empower and Protect Crime Victims' Rights is Mothers Against Murder's, "MAM" primary exempt purposes. Helping survivors of homicide, the family, friends and the community of the murdered victim, is the priority work at MAM. But, it's very difficult to turn away other types of crime victims who tend to find MAM after they have been re-victimized and re-traumatized by the justice system that is there to protect them, but the red tape bureaucracy fails the most vulnerable during the most difficult time of their lives. MAM becomes the expert voice to speak up for victims by moving up chain of commands, demanding accountability and transparency by the government agencies who hold the powers to bring justice to survivors. Mothers Against Murder, "MAM", is a very small nonprofit that is highly proactive, highly experienced victim of crime advocacy group that not just helps individual cases, but takes on the very large and bureaucratic systems to make the necessary changes.</PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Supporting Survivors/Protecting Victims' Rights This is not a job, but a passion that we have proved to be very good at. The best way to document our passion and charitable work is to give you examples of some of the cases from the calendar year 2023: BA's 15-year-old son was shot to death in August. A month later this mother was referred to MAM because the county Victim Assistance Center had denied the emergency application for the CA Victim Compensation of funeral expenses. We went to work believing and trusting the mother's information, connecting with the police who supported that the son is an innocent victim. We went up chain of command to reverse the denial and approve the reimbursement of funeral cost. In addition, this family could not stay at their apartment complex where the murder happened and no one had advised this mother of yet another benefit of relocation. We helped to get relocation benefit to a safe place. BA was referred to MAM by her relative who we helped in 2013 having to write a dozen letters to elected officials to intervene in the denial of yet another Victim Compensation in another county Victim Witness Office. A second example case in 2023 is of JW, a truck driver who was shot in the leg in 2021 and was unable to work for over one year coming close to bankruptcy. Before JW found MAM, he and his partner tried the county and the state office, including their elected representatives, but no one was able to help. JW end up filing a writ in court and was about to drop the case when we stepped in to prove the eligibility. We were able to advocate through the CA Attorney General's Office. JW received the maximum of $70,000 on his CA Victim Application File and the court case was successfully dismissed. Fact is $70,000 is a fraction of the financial loss that JW suffered in addition to the emotional trauma and the fact that the injury of his foot will never fully recover and goes numb when he drives long hours.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Asian Hate Crimes, Court Accompaniment and Victims' Rights: In 2023, we took on an important project of digging into records of why there are such low numbers of claims filed for the state's victim compensation under the "Asian Hate Crimes". We connected with two dozen agencies and community leaders that help the Asian population to collaborate and bring awareness to victims' rights.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Court Accompaniment The court system is incredibly intimidating to survivors. Having to come in contact with the accused is traumatizing. This system was not designed with crime victims in mind. There is a huge need for this service. We have managed to help by accompanying survivors to court as much as time allows for this important service.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
