<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>DEVELOPMENT OF PUBLIC DOCS/INFORMATION NAUFRP International Committee representatives to the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) International Committee participated in meeting planning and development of 2024 IUFRO World Congress to be held in Stockholm, Sweden. They have met (2023 NAUFRP General Assembly) with representatives of the International Forest Student Association to discuss assisting with opening new student chapters at NAUFRP institutions (currently there are five in the U.S. and Canada) and consideration of a Memorandum of Understanding. The Communications Committee oversaw the newsletter 'NAUFRP News' published in 2023 (it and previous issues are at www.naufrp.org/newsletter. The intended audience is the NAUFRP membership, partners and policy makers. Under the NAUFRP Communications Committee, NAUFRP institutions continued to populate the NAUFRP webpage with forestry and natural resource research projects at NAUFRP universities that demonstrate real world impacts and benefits of their research. These are intended to be shared with a wide ranging audience of partners and policy makers. The NAUFRP Extension Committee is responsible for managing the annual Family Forests Education Award cosponsored with the National Woodland Owners Association. In 2023, the recipient of the individual program award was presented to The Connecticut Master Wood Manager Program, a collaboration among state and university partners (University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension, Audubon Connecticut, Yale University, Connecticut Land Conservation Coalition and US Forest Service). This is an interactive program that requires forest owners to complete integrated online and field education. The Comprehensive Program Award was presented to the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Faculty and professional staff work from 4 locations throughout Georgia to provide educational programs and resources to address critical issues (invasive species, timber tax issues) faced by family landowners. The NAUFRP Diversity Committee was charged by the Executive Committee in March 2023 to develop an award and criteria to recognize an individual, program or organization demonstrating sustained dedication to inclusive excellence, promoting a sense of belonging and achievement in equal access at the NAUFRP member organization and beyond. The Diversity Committee submitted a proposal to the Executive Committee in October 2023 which was approved for implementation in 2024. The Diversity Committee organized two panels for the Society of American Foresters 2023 National Convention held in Sacramento, CA (October 25-28, 2023). Six members of the Executive Committee participated in one panel titled "Advance the Health, Productivity and Sustainability of American Forests". Its objectives were to address national issues for future leaders, make connections among educators, scientists, students, professional forest managers, conservation leaders, landowners and forest users as well as to promote cultural diversity and inclusion practices. The second panel focused on Urban and Community Forests and was with collaboration from the Society of American Foresters Working Group on Urban and Community Forests. It included NAUFRP representatives from the Universities of Florida, California (Berkeley), Connecticut and Iowa State. NAUFRP's Southern Region held an in-person meeting June 19th in conjunction with the Forest Landowners Association in Nashville, TN. Southern NAUFRP annually conducts a Comparative Data Survey of the region's institutions for information on faculty salary's (different levels: full, assistant professorships), tenure positions, student enrollment numbers, graduate assistantships. The NAUFRP North Central Region held quarterly virtual meetings with member representatives with focus on student enrollment information at the undergraduate and graduate levels.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>USDA LIAISON The NAUFRP Executive Committee met two times in 2023 and the General Assembly once. At the March 20-21 meeting in Washington, D.C., the NAUFRP Executive Committee met with the following federal partners: Dr.Peter Thompson of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and Dr. Linda Heath, Acting Deputy Chief, USDA Forest Service Research and Development. The Executive Committee also met with representatives of non-governmental partners including the American Forest Foundation, Association of Public Land-Grant Universities, National Alliance of Forest Owners, National Association of University Fish and Wildlife Programs, National Association of State Foresters and the Society of American Foresters. Representatives from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture also presented at the meeting. At its October 24th meeting in Sacramento, CA the Executive Committee met with representatives of the USDA National Institution of Food and Agriculture to discuss bioenergy and climate change research programs. The Executive Committee also met with the Society of American Foresters who was to convene a Summit on Mature and Old Growth Forests in 2024 and which NAUFRP Representatives agreed to serve on the Steering Committee. The NAUFRP General Assembly meeting on October 25th included presentations and discussions with Dr. Peter Thompson of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and Dr. David Lytle, Deputy Chief, Research and Development, U.S. Forest Service. Following the General Assembly meeting the Executive Committee met with the US Forest Service Research & Development Executive Leadership Team which included the agency's Research Station Directors from across the county. They discussed mutual research priorities and ways to collaborate and partner resources to achieve shared goals. They also identified a working group from those present to focus on mutual issues and challenges. The NAUFRP Policy Chair has become the Vice-Chair of the USDA Forest Research Advisory Committee (FRAC). It met for the first time in four years November 15-16, 2023, in Washington, D.C. FRAC is considering forwarding recommendations to the USDA Secretary that include legislation allowing tuition to be allowed for graduate students for the McIntire Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Programs and partnerships that connect university forestry/natural resource programs with community colleges to grow the pool of prospective graduate students. The NAUFRP Policy Chair participated in regular meetings with the Forest Carbon Working Group as they worked with Congress and the Biden Administration on climate and bioenergy legislation and policy issues related to forestry. NAUFRP is a founding member of the Working Group formed in 2007. The Policy Chair actively participated in the development of a platform for the Forests in the Farm Bill Coalition which NAUFRP is an original member. The Farm Bill was due for reauthorization in 2023. The Policy Committee provided input to the Association of Public Land Grant Universities Association on research priorities for climate policy legislation and the Farm Bill. <DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>ANNUAL MEETING The NAUFRP General Assembly met in-person on October 25, 2023 (Sacramento, CA) for the annual meeting. The NAUFRP Research Committee reported on their ongoing progress to assess the two-decade decline in forestry research funding and capacity. This effort has involved partnering with the Society of American Foresters and the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities. During the spring of 2023, a national survey of over 300 forest managers were asked to identify their highest-priority forest management problems. The five top forestry research and development priorities were: workforce issues, forest health, climate change adaptation, public perceptions and wildfire. A Forestry and Wood Products R&D Summit was held June 6-8 in Washington, D.C. to discuss approaches to collectively identify, communicate, coordinate and advocate for U.S. forest and forest products R&D priorities, capacity and funding. The Summit leaders identified three primary R&D priority areas that merit focus from a future consortium: forest health improvements; climate change and adaptation and wildfire mitigation, with one additional priority - strengthening workforce capacity.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
