Our signature programs include medical student and resident training on women's health including all methods of family planning, patient assistance for family planning services for low income and uninsured people, and community education and engagement around issues of reproductive health, rights, and justice. People come to train from across the United States and Canada. We provide invited speakers, host, and sponsor public facing education. The total cost for that would be $32,520. 31567 0 600 Our Next Generation Abortion Providers Program trains medical students and residents in reproductive health care with an emphasis on abortion training. Clinical instruction includes abortion, contraception, early pregnancy loss, other common women's health conditions, and care of transgender adults. To date, medical students and residents have traveled to Phoenix from 19 states and 3 regions of Canada to be trained. We apply a reproductive justice lens to our work, so students have and experience very different from their traditional clinical rotations. We believe that learning about abortion in an environment where abortion occurs alongside general well-woman care increases student awareness and understanding that abortion is health care. In turn, they are inspired to advocate for womens reproductive healthcare access and delivery, and are empowered to become advocates within their own communities. 1 - 4 week rotations can be scheduled at the Desert Star Health Justice Clinic. We are a preferred site for the Medical Students for Choice Reproductive Health Externship Program. Out of state post graduate physicians must obtain a temporary Arizona medical or osteopathic license. 7 people were trained over 20 total training weeks in 2023. Impacted by the supreme court Dobbs decision that overturned roe v wade in June 2022, we paused our training program as we determined how our sister clinic's operations would change under a new gestational limit ban. 19 weeks of rotations were lost, displacing 8 trainees. 33296 0 0 Our Doulas 4 Change Project mission is to educate, organize, and build leadership and power among Black birthers, birthworkers and their communities to influence policies and practices that decrease Black maternal mortality and morbidity in Arizona and support pregnant people's self determination in whatever pregnancy outcome they choose. The doula training program has been incubating since receiving seed funding in 2022 and is ready to launch in 2024. Our goal in creating a doula-promotora model is to strengthen the skills of these needed community health workers to advocate for the communities they serve. We are launching a pilot cohort of 10 doulas. Recruitment begins January 2024. The data indicates that increased access to community-based doula care can help improve birth outcomes and reduce the higher rates of maternal morbidity and mortality among women of color in the United States, and more specifically Arizona. The March of Dimes recently gave Arizona a C graded, specifically noting that the preterm birth rate among Black women is 41% higher than the rate among all other women. Increased access to doula care is even more critical for doulas to share ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic commonalities with their clients. Empowering Black doulas with advocacy tools, peer support, policy education, and reproductive justice framework will prepare them to support families in a way they have not been trained for before. Part III, Line 4d Our Community Education and Engagement program delivers educational content and programs that help people from historically marginalized communities access reproductive health care and exercise autonomy over their bodies and lives. We also engage, build relationships, and mobilize local policymakers, advocates, and community members directly impacted by harmful policies toward Arizona that provide the conditions for people to freely decide when and how to form families and raise children. Our major areas of focus are abortion and birth justice. Our education is delivered via virtual and in-person events and workshops. We have content for a variety of organizations and settings. in 2023 we hosted, co-hosted, provided speakers for 25 lectures/community events. Approximately 1300 community members were reached through live participation and viewing of recorded content. We continued to convene 3 community coalitions for reproductive rights and justice in Arizona for approximately 100 hours of coalition policy and advocacy strategy, grassroots leadership development, and community organizing. We are excited to cultivate grassroots leadership of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color who are disproportionately impacted by harmful reproductive health policies.
