CMPI continues to engage in many cross-sectoral projects across the United States and Africa, including the engagement of journalists, diplomats, business leaders, students, academics, scholars, and public policy experts. CMPI's unique platform facilitates discussion around specific subject areas, with the goal of generating new knowledge and understanding, forging, and expanding new international, intercultural, interdisciplinary research networks, and partnerships. The Peace Journalism and Consolidation of Democracy seminar sought to strengthen media institutions' capacity to work towards sustainable, peaceful, and democratic solutions to the inherent ethnic-based and sectarian divisions in Nigeria took place in two cities - Abuja and Enugu (April 17-21, 2023). As a pilot project, the seminar provided descriptive and causal evidence on the scope of peace journalism, freedom of expression, and possible interventions among professional journalists that cover ethnic divisions, corruption, and political violence in a diverse country of 216 million people. Participants will explore the potentials of security governance towards peace and justice in the face of the growing backsliding of democracy in many countries including the United States.. The 2023 edition of the Gershowitz Conference on Media and Democratic Governance engaged a broad spectrum of practitioners, academics, civil society leaders, journalists, and other stakeholders with professional expertise on priority topics related to democratic recession around the world. The CMPI-SPAA partnership creates a unique platform that facilitates discussion around specific subject areas in the democracy, governance, and media fields, with the goal of generating new knowledge and understanding, forging, and expanding new international, intercultural, interdisciplinary research networks, and partnerships.
