In 2023 we reopened our Teacher Trip program to US teachers, providing professional development opportunities within a context that emphasizes cultural education expansion, connection and exchange. Through our new partnership with the Wisconsin Math Council we built a joint experience for 12 US educators to travel to Antigua, Guatemala, for one week and receive virtual, year-round professional development to engage in culturally relevant learning in their classrooms and workspaces. We also hosted an open trip to Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, with nine educators from around the US who were immersed in rural, indigenous culture at a local school. Additionally, we delivered a two-week partnership in Nepal with Kathmandu University for 12 US professors who were given the opportunity to develop an understanding of non-US approaches to education. They visited a variety of local schools, attended roundtable discussions learning about math education challenges from Nepalese educators, and experienced an immersion in Nepalese culture, traditions, and math education history. Through a Morgan Creek Foundation grant we launched our successful Girls STEM Club in North Carolina, working with 25 girls and 4 teachers through 9 sessions. In 2023 we returned to in-person programs whilst offering virtual options for greater access and reach. We ran a total of 21 programs working directly with 2,280 K-12 international teachers and 161 students and indirectly reaching over 70,000 students. The expansion of our flagship programs - MathMobile and Girls STEM Club - have allowed us to deepen the professional development work we do with teachers and advance in our theory of change and program model to progress teachers from "Learn" to "Apply." Our international and national community outreach connected with teachers across the globe through our bilingual Global Math Stories (GMS) Conference and website as well as participating in conferences in the US, Peru, and Ecuador. In 2023, we fell slightly short, achieving a rate of just under 30 percent. Overall 2023 was a challenging year in the philanthropy sector, and Mathkind was adversely affected by broad trends in diminished giving. Additionally, expected grants for which we had applied did not materialize due to funders either delaying delivery or altering their criteria. These circumstances significantly impacted our overall income targets and, consequently, our ability to meet the usual public support threshold. Mathkind has developed a strong fundraising strategy that includes a range of grant and foundation applications, a monthly giving program, and annual fundraising campaigns. The latter included a Pi Day match giving effort, $5,757.00 raised, and targeted Giving Tuesday communications. Also, our annual Fall Function gala, which began in 2022, raised $43,000 in 2023 towards our programs. We received gifts in 2023 from more than 30 new organizational and individual funders and aim to push for larger support from these sources in 2024. We will also continue to seek new donors through a communications plan that leverages our social media and email reach of over 20,000 individuals. As an additional source of income we have been gifted a contract grant writer that will write a series of grants for us this year in an effort to increase our grant writing capacity and increase our probability of winning a major grant. Mathkind worked diligently with our Board of Trustees to add to the range of our fundraising initiatives, establishing working committees, including one focused solely on resource development. We saw 100 percent of our board members make donations in 2023, which was an increase from the previous year. We continue to provide a range of professional development opportunities to educators and learners, including our virtual courses on Participate and through our own website. In 2023, we published three new Global Math Stories and added 17 standards-aligned, classroom activity packets to our existing library of 87 narratives. These resources are available at no cost, to teachers globally and to the general public. They provide an additional support to our more tailored programs which focus on select communities and partners. Throughout 2023 we also solidified the implementation of our five-year strategic plan. We established a strategic planning committee and inserted the 2023 objectives into our team's annual goals. One of the key strategic objectives is the diversification of our income streams to place us in a sustainable position to continuously meet the one third public support test.
