We do this by providing information through quarterly newsletters, membership meetings, and through our website. We also advocate for retirees by working with Sonoma County Human Resources Benefits Unit, Sonoma County employees & unions, the Board of Supervisors, Sonoma County Employees Retirement Association (SCERA), and CRCEA. 0 0 SCARE's primary role is to provide advocacy to protect the benefits and interests of our members (approximately 1,850) by working with a number of organizations in Sonoma County and throughout California. There is little cost to this as activities are done by volunteer Board Members. We also provide information to all our members through quarterly newsletters and a website. Information is also provided through quarterly membership meetings (approximately 60 members) with speakers offered in person and on Zoom. SCARE provides scholarships to children and grandchildren of Sonoma County employees and retirees. We provide three $1,500 scholarships to students at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) and two $3,000 scholarships to students at Sonoma State University (SSU). Money is given directly to the colleges and they select and monitor the students. The amount for this year was less than $4,500 as there was a credit for prior scholarship that was not used. 3 1500 0 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 SRJC and SSU take applications from students based on guidelines SCARE gives them. They contact our Scholarship chair who checks with Sonoma County departments to verify that applicant is an employee or retiree of the county and passes that information to the scholarship office. Once recipient is selected, SRJC or SSU monitors progress to make sure the student achieves the required GPA. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2 2 of our Board members are married to each other. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6 As of December 31, 2023, SCARE had 1700 members and 163 associate members for a total of 1863 Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a Members who attend the November Membership Meeting elect half of the Board Members each year. Associate members cannot vote. Board members serve a 2 year term. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7b Members have to approve changes in membership dues. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8b SCARE has committees but all decisions are referred to and made by the Board of Directors. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b Prior to filing the f990, a completed copy of the 990 is sent to all Board Members for their review, if they choose to do so. There is no formal approval process by the Board. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 SCARE's governing documents are available to anyone on the website at www.sonomacountyretirees.com. Financial statement are available to members upon request. SCARE has no formal conflict of interest policies. Form 990, Part IX, Line 11g We have an IT person helping us with computer related duties and Zoom connections/recording.
