<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Allen Contemporary Theatre presented seven theatrical productions in 2022. We opened the season with "God of Carnage" by Yasmina Reza. A playground altercation led to a meeting of two sets of parents. Diplomatic niceties were initially observed, but soon tensions emerged and the gloves came off. The next production was "Deathtrap" by Ira Levin. A successful writer struggling with a dry spell recognized a hit thriller in a script from a student. He offered collaboration to the student, but there were twists and turns and hilarious shocks. The 3rd production was "Clue" by Jonathan Lynn. Based on the movie and the board game, six guests assembled at a remote mansion. When the host turned up dead, they all became suspects in a comedy whodunnit. Next was "It's Only a Play" by Terrence McNally. On opening night, theater insiders awaited the reviews along with a drama critic and an aspiring singer. Narcissism, ambition, childishness, and irrationality ensue in the play they were sure would be a hit. Then we presented "Light Up the Sky" by Moss Hart. Expecting a tremendous success from a play by a young writer, the first act led the cast and others to believe it was instead a flop so they turned on each other. Our 6th production was "The Drowsy Chaperone" a musical by Lambert, McKellar, Martin, & Morrison. While a narrator played his favorite record, a fictitious musical came to life. With two lovers, a bumbling best man, a desperate producer, a dim hostess, gangsters posing as chefs, a Don Juan, and a drunk chaperone, all combined into a madcap delight. We closed the season with "It Runs in the Family" by Ray Cooney. A hospital had farcical nuts running in and out of doors and mistaking everybody for someone else. A doctor had to fend off a paternity suit, his ex-wife, a punkish son, and various other lunatics so he could deliver his lecture at an international conference. Part of this accomplishment was regaining our level of audience numbers from before Covid. The 2020 season was an almost total loss. 2021 was the first building block of our recovery. The total attendance for the 2022 season finally matched our 2019 season, which was just before Covid pulled the bottom out. It took a lot of planning and hard work to schedule and produce an attractive season with an upbeat musical, several tried and true plays and playwrights, and even a newer type of play. It also took a lot of support from our audiences, donors, and generous funding sources.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>ACT offered eight theatre-related summer camps in 2022. Each camp lasted five weekdays We started with "Encanto" in which campers participated in theatre games, prop making, acting, singing and choreography. That was followed by "Harry Potter and the Fantastic Muggle" where campers decided what would happen if they stumbled into Hogwarts. There were potions & wands, fantastic beasts, wizard battles, and Quidditch. Another camp was "Costume and Make-up Camp" which had campers were to design their own character, and were challenged to create that character in costume with just four items. Another camp was "Lights, Cameras, IMPROV" where campers learned the basics of improv, storytelling, thinking quickly on their feet, and stagecraft. Following that was "Trek Wars Galaxy" in which campers considered what would happen if Luke Skywalker met Spock. They built lightsabers and phasers and practiced dueling. Another camp was "Ahoy, Pirates!" where campers learned stage combat, made parrots, and built a pirate ship. Through these camps, the campers learned a variety of theatre skills, including: writing scripts, creating sets, make-up, hair, costumes, sewing, choreography, stage combat, character development, mask making, presenting plays, voice, dance, prop-making and acting. Improvisation was used to connect to other actors, storytelling, thinking on their feet and thereby building a foundation of acting skills. Camps were led by experienced theatre professionals and each camp culminated in a performance on the final day. ACT also offered four theatre-related classes in 2022. Classes are held on a specific weekday during the months of October and November. One class was "Intermediate Actors" (4th grade through 8th grade) on Tuesdays. These students learned how to get into character and figure out what that character would think, feel, like, and dislike. Another class was "Rising Star Actors" (kindergarten through 3rd grade) on Thursdays. Students learned basic acting skills, what a character is, and how to work together. Both classes were taught by experienced theatre professionals. The final day for each class was a performance to showcase what they had learned in the class.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>ACT's seasons have periods when the theater space in not in use for plays, musicals, rehearsals, set building, or meetings. These gaps are called Dark Nights because no one is at the theatre and the lights are off. ACT presented three Bonus Events in 2022. These productions served, not only to fill in some of those Dark Nights, but also to give our audiences additional opportunities to enjoy our theatrical events, and continue to be involved, interested, and engaged. Bonus Events are now permanent ACT features to complement our regular seasons. They typically have one performance or a weekend of performances. This year we had: 1) a staged reading of the play "Temporary Container" by Joe Horest; 2) the first of our new Spotlight Events "Spotlight on the Ladies" which was an evening of female performers singing their favorite arias from musicals; and 3) our first Halloween event "Dr. Montague's Carnival of the Bizarre" written by the father (board member) and son team of Bill and Bishop Wash. All Bonus Events were very well received by audiences and performers, who have been enthusiastic about including such events in future seasons.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
