FFS leads restoration efforts to increase wildlife and open space values and supports the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department which manages the Slough. The Friends have acquired vacant land around the Slough and have established and maintained California native plants. 0 1 10669 0 0 $1,205 - For 2020 the Friends conducted our regular semi-monthly community volunteer cleanups at the Slough in January and March. These events included maintaining trails and removal of weeds that were stimulated by the earlier rains. When the COVID-19 restrictions took place, community events were cancelled, and experienced volunteers worked on their own or in small groups to try to keep the weeds from taking over and to keep litter from the neighborhood from getting into the Slough. This expense included supplies for making some improvements to trails and erosion control, and purchase of California native plants for habitat restoration. +$3,578 - Property Taxes for land purchased by the Friends in 2012 and 2014 adjacent to Famosa Slough (vacant land that will be eventually turned over to the City of San Diego when native plants have been established. +$5,886 - Services associated with water service, tree removal, and maintenance help at the land owned by the Friends, including labor. See Schedule O for itemized expenses. *$10,669 = Total of $1,205 + $3,578 + $5,886 for Restoration of Famosa Slough and Friends' property. 230 0 0 $230 = Total of 2020 expenses that were education-related, as follows: $100 - Education (Science Fair) - Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Friends awarded two students at the San Diego Science Fair. The COVID-19 pandemic restricted the Friends' activities because school groups could not participate. Because the value is not known (and it is actually zero dollars because there are restrictions by the State of California to sell the property), we should have been using the cost of the land. The purchase amounts in 2012 and 2014 were $307,246 and $251,325, respectively, which equals $558,571. Form 990, Part III, Line 3 Significant changes were made in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not being able to give tours or have volunteer events at Famosa Slough with the public and students. The Friends also did not have an annual meeting in 2020 which would have increased our membership and contribution levels. Despite these restrictions, the Friends had at least 71 volunteers who performed over 1,000 hours at the Slough and adjacent vacant land removing invasives, weeding, improving trails, and picking up trash. Besides physical labor, Board members spent close to 1,000 hours in Famosa Slough related meetings, on computers, on phone calls, and on email. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 The Friends will provide its governing documents to the public if they are requested. Form 990, Part IX, Line 11g List of expenses totaling $5,886: $4,900 labor for maintenance, + $86 for water service, + $900 for tree removal. Form 990, Part XI, Line 8 Prior period adjustments: $1,825 was the difference at end of 2019 for checks not cleared by 1/1/2020. Form 990, Part XI, Line 9 other changes in net assets: Land value in previous years was based on value given on property tax bills. Starting with the 2020 Form 990, we are using the value at the time of purchase of properties, which was $307,246 plus $251,325 = $558,571. The difference between amounts in 2019 and 2020 returns is $616,705 minus $558,571, equals $58,134. This return was originally submitted by US mail November 15, 2021, because a request for extension was made in May 2021. The undersigned was not aware that returns were supposed to be submitted electronically. Due to the backlog at the IRS, it was not logged into the system until December 3, 2021, and it was returned to the Friends of Famosa Slough along with "Ltr 2694C" dated March 23, 2022. We received the letter and the returned Form 990 on April 4, 2022. As Treasurer of the Friends, I am submitting this return electronically for the first time.
