As a routine part of their responsibilities, IEER's staff actively seek new funding from the public. IEER seeks funds from a broad mailing list. Fundraising appeals are made to individuals and groups that have an interest in the health of the environment, in energy issues, and in IEER's mission to bring scientific excellence to public policy issues and the democratization of science. IEER's support comes from numerous unrelated individuals, not a single family. IEER also works with other non-profit environmental organizations that serve a broad public and raise funds from the public, to provide those NGOs with scientific and technical reports on relevant topics like a transition to renewable energy. IEER sometimes collaborates with independent experts, including in other non-profit organizations, in preparing such studies. These expert studies reach a wide public and the media as well as policymakers. In 2019, IEER began two multi-year collaborations, each involving several non-profit organizations; one involves increasing solar energy access for low and moderate income households, the second involves increasing regenerative agriculture and finding ways to join renewable energy with regenerative agriculture to the benefit of both. In 2021, IEER partnered with the 501(c)(3) organization PSE Healthy Energy to prepare a report on energy equity for the State of Colorado Energy Office. IEER's Board of Directors is comprised of individuals with expertise in energy, environmental, and health issues as well as in education. Board members represent the interests of the general public. An important part of IEER's work is to make research results available to the general public. IEER accomplishes this goal by publishing results on its website, participating in meetings and discussion groups, participating in coalitions and networks of NGOs, writing articles, and speaking on the radio. These factors indicate that IEER is a publicly supported organization.
